Science

 

People will always be curious about the world in which we live. Science can be used to explain many everyday experiences and observations. Science is 'real-life', it's relevant. Science courses studied by students at Nerang High encourage them to be curious, to increase their awareness of the many uses of science and its impact on their day-to-day lives and to develop sound problem-solving strategies that can be applied to a myriad of situations.

Global aims

Science prepares our students for life in our rapidly changing technological society.  Many careers need a base of Science knowledge: nursing, dietician, doctor, physiotherapist, engineer, chemist, geologist, scientist, beautician, horticulturalist, greenkeeper, and chef just to name a few.

In the middle phase of learning all students will gain a basic scientific knowledge, studying topics such as Science as a Human Endeavour, Earth and Beyond, Energy and Change, Life and Living, and Natural and Processed Materials. These topics provide a base knowledge for students, and prepare them for the more demanding areas of the Senior Sciences.

Students in science will also gain a good grounding in laboratory skills and experimental design. Science is practically based with experimental investigations to a develop skills and explain the world around us.

Course organisation

All students who expect to work towards a career with a Science based university level qualification will need to study at least one of Senior Biology, Senior Chemistry or Senior Physics or a combination of these subjects.

Year 8

All students study Science for the year.

Year 9

All students study Science for the year.

Physics

These subjects are more specific that the general science studied in years 8 and 9. As well as building on previous knowledge, students are introduced to the demands and rigours of studying science subjects offered in years 11 and 12.
