The Guidance officer acts as counsellor, consultant and facilitator in both group and individual settings. Practices include evaluation of clinical data, liaising with specialist agencies and recommending appropriate referrals. Functions include:

Career

  • Providing advice/management for strategies and resources related to Careers Education.
  • Assisting students in gaining career direction.

Educational

  • Helping new enrolments, especially where particular needs exist.
  • Support, directly or indirectly, for special needs groups, providing educational assessments.
  • Supporting programs designed to inform teachers/students about educational concerns (eg. study skills, ATAR, Careers, etc).
  • Support students with flexible school programs and alternative education programs.

Welfare

  • Offering counselling support for students in crisis.
  • Providing short-term support, clarification and goal-setting for family and personal concerns.
  • Referrals to outside agencies for specialist support.
  • Referral/recommendation of outside support agencies for long term therapy for outside school issues.
  • Assisting students with development issues, such as peer-group relationships, decision-making, problem-solving and self-esteem.
